Understanding Loss

               Working Through Grief

We all face loss as a matter of course during our lives. Some of these losses are expected, and others are quite sudden. A number of these losses will have a serious impact on our lives, beliefs, and at times our wellbeing.

Some of the issues for which people might seek counselling support include:

• the ending of a relationship,
• job loss,
• relocation,
• miscarriage
• serious illness,
• the closure of a business,
• declining health and
• the death of someone significant

In addition, all of life’s transitions contain an element of loss from our first day at school through to the losses we face in ageing.

Grief is a healthy and normal response to loss. But it can be very painful and often challenges us beyond our usual ability to cope. Reactions to loss may occur immediately, or many months and even years after, and can present in a number of different ways.

For example:

• guilt
• depression
• overwhelming sadness
• debilitating anxiety
• loss of interest and energy for life
• poor health
• physical and emotional exhaustion

Narelle’s counselling practice offers individuals, couples, families and groups the opportunity to explore specific losses in their lives, and work through the processes of adapting to a life forever changed.
